NINE

The pain was nearly completely gone by the time I woke up. I slowly peeled one of the bandages near my armpit to get a look at the damage, grimacing at the bluish-grey tinge bruise twisting up my shoulder.

“Oh no you don’t!”

Elsebet descended on me, sudden and with the grace of a dancer. She gently smeared more paste onto the bandages covering my shoulder and pulled them down further. This layer was smelly and thick, and caused the bandages to cling together. “These don’t move for another two hours. Don’t even try it,” she warned when I opened my mouth. “I don’t want Lora Walker up my ass, too.”

“She’s not up my ass,” I shot back before settling back on my pillow.

“Amazing. I’m almost convinced you believe it.” Elsebet turned to a small bowl filled with aromatic liquid, and picked up a batch of fresh bandages.

‘How long have you known Gabe and Lora?” I asked, watching her lean over the bowl.

A tiny huff of laughter as Elsebet dropped a fresh bandage into the liquid, then sprinkled something from a sachet.”Long enough to know Lora’s worried sick. Worried about the humans, worried about having to fight again, worried about you most of all.”

“She doesn’t need–”

“Oh, Mothers, it doesn’t matter if she needs to!” Elsebet sounded more amused than angry. She moved her hand over to the bandages on my right arm. She slowly peeled one away to look at the skin underneath, then removed the entire piece, muttering something about a resoak. “I met Lora during the Second Uprising,” she said. “At the time, Daughters from the Three Courts trained separately, but I ended up being referred to Lora after word of me spread to the Vampires. Mainly my size. They thought I would be useful. And so I was, but not for the reasons they expected.”

She pushed the bandages around the bowl, to soak up the liquid. I could see her muscles bulge even with the smallest of movements. I knew at that moment that I would spend every waking moment making sure Elsebet was never mad at me. Ever.

“You’re a healer, but you’re-”

“A Wolf Elder, and a Daughter? Yeah, it surprises me too. Lots of hats. Some I never expected to wear. But above all else I consider myself a medic.” Once the bandages were fully soaked, Elsebet lifted them up, carefully, as if one false move would melt them, and wrapped them around my arm. They smelled like orange, with the faintest edge of mint.

“Wolf Elders are called alphas too, right?” I asked, my words slurring a little.

“It’s best if you don’t talk right now, but yes.” Elsebet smeared more paste on my arm. “Alphas are more like the head of a family. We run on pack rules; the bigger you are, the more power you can have. My pack is the biggest, so we tend to make the rules. Some Alphas are also Elders, but not all of them. Eamonn’s pack is closely aligned with mine. We’ve kept training, despite the Court’s overall hesitance to keep the program running.
